Unearth: The March

Unearth continues to show why they are considered one of the best metalcore bands going today with their latest release The March. Featuring fast paced songs full of sizzling guitar solos, frantic rhythms, effective vocal shouts, and arrangements that hark back to the glory days of the Bay Area Thrash scene as well as the NWOBHM, The March is the logical successor to both The Ongoing Storm and III: In the Eyes of Fire, the band's last two stellar releases. From the opening blast of white-hot shred guitar on "My Will Be Done", to the thrash/hardcore hybrid of the melodic yet crushing "Hail the Shrine", to the dynamic progressive extreme metal insanity of "Crow Killer", this one starts off with a bang and never lets up. The guitar work of Buz McGrath & Ken Susi is just outstanding throughout, as the two young axe studs crank out plenty of complex riff-o-rama and lethal shred solos. Other highlights include the thrash-n-burn of "Grave of Opportunity", the mosh-pit friendly title track, the galloping "Cutman", and the slower, melodic, almost doomy at times "Letting Go", all tunes featuring Trevor Phipps' leather lunged screams & shouts, as the singer continues to distance himself from many of the other growlers and grunters in the metalcore genre. He let's it all hang out on the bombastic closer "Truth Or Consequence" a gargantuan mix of brutal hardcore, 80's thrash, and melodic metal, the singer spewing out many styles, each one fitting perfectly with the segment of the song as it morphs into different levels of intensity.

With tasty harmony guitar work that will remind of some of the greats of old like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Metallica, Testament, Megadeth, or Exodus, lots of crushing breakdowns, strong vocals, and tight rhythms, The March has a lot to offer todays extreme metal fan. It's also another reason to believe that Unearth will continue to climb their way up the ladder to stardom.
