King Crimson: The Collectable King Crimson Volume Three-Live at Shepherds Bush Empire, London 1996

Taken from the bands 2 track stereo soundboard mix of their Jully 1st show at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London in 1996, this part three of their 'Collectable' series not only sports fantastic sound but also is the first complete show of the Double Trio incarnation of the band since B'BOOM: Official Bootleg, which was a 1995 release of a show in Argentina. If you loved that CD, or the first two releases in this series, this will be a must have.

The Double Trio-Fripp, Belew, Levin, Gunn, Bruford, and Mastelotto, perform favorites old and new here, staying clear from the long & rambling improvs that the current line-up seem to want to go into in recent years. Highlights include scorching versions of "Thela Hun Ginjeet", 'Red", "Dinosaur", "VROOOM VROOOM", and over on Disc 2, you get the band lurching into daring and menacing renditions of "Lark's Tongues In Aspic Pt II", "THRAK", "Indiscipline", and a surprise "21st Century Schizoid Man", an era of the band that KC rarely has gone back to in recent memory. Fripp and Belew are two axe-slingers completely locked in throughout, and Belew's vocals are superb in this set. As for the other folks, well they are absolutely solid as always, Tony Levin rising above the crowd with his muscular yet slippery bass lines, proving to be the perfect foil to Gunn's WARR guitar, and the master drummers Bruford & Mastelotto. The band is so tight, it's not until the final minute of "Shiziod Man" that you hear a slight flub by this unit, which almost comes across as a complete shock when it happens after well over an hour of near perfection.

End result is yet another stellar live document from another era in the history of this legendary progressive rock band. Let's hope for more in this series!
