Enuff Z'nuff: Tonight-Sold Out (Reissue)

Nothing, it seems, has come easy for Enuff Z'nuff. This American power-pop hair-metal collective has endured record-label strife, an indifferent listening public and even the deaths of two members during its tumultuous quarter-century of existence. But Tonight–Sold Out, a short 11-song live set from 2007 whose packaging is riddled with inaccurate and incomplete information and track-listing misprints, provides at least some proof of why Enuff Z'nuff hasn't yet had enough. By mixing Beatles and Cheap Trick influences with those of Queen and Poison, the band made – hell, still makes, as an umpteenth studio album reportedly is in the works – melodic, harmony-drenched sweet-sounding music that's neither too sleazy nor too muscular. Thus, Enuff Z'nuff got lost in the crowd but remains a cult favorite.

On this limited-edition digipak reissue of Tonight–Sold Out, the quartet demonstrates its appeal and covers a lot of ground -- from early hits like "Fly High Michelle" and "New Thing" to the sloppy blues of "In Groove" to the sprawling and surreal grandeur of "Takin' A Ride." The audio quality is raw, and the booklet lists the guitarist as Derek Frigo (who died three years before these songs were supposedly recorded). But hardcore fans will cherish this small keepsake of a band that deserves a much better fate.
