To start off, funeral doom, for me, is one of the metal sub-genres that is often times hard to fully get into. I prefer music with just a little bit more music & melody to it. For those that are more into this type of style, The Ethereal brings you a 4 track album that is filled with the dreary sludge that could be Dracula's lullaby. With each song clocking in at over ten minutes, Stijn Van Cauter has produced a wealth of what could be best described as a 3 note symphony with flares of loud drums for the most part. There is the occasional keyboard piece that is like an out of place melody amidst all the gloom. One piano selection on the track "From Funeral Skies" is actually quite nice, for its one minute duration. Maybe I am just too far removed from the hallucinogenic compounds needed to produce the catatonic state needed to enjoy this kind of work, but if you have a penchant for this type of slow moving dirge, then by all means dig in!
