Violinist/composer Yehudit brings together some of the Bay Area's top jazz musicians for In the Zone, the brand new release on Edgetone Records that hits upon both modern & classic jazz styles, classical, free jazz, and avant-garde. Performing on five-string electric & acoustic violin, Yehudit is joined by sax/clarinet player Sheldon Brown, guitarist Steve Erquiaga, bassist Dan Feiszli, drummer Curt Moore, and vibraphone player Gerry Grosz. With their combined efforts, In the Zone comes across with a 'big band' sound, as the violinist scored this work for a multi-timbral chamber jazz ensemble, and it works on all levels. Challenging and complex at times, soothing and gentle with plenty of soaring melodies at others, Yehudit and her band offer plenty of quality jazz for the listener. Check out Erquiaga's tasty licks and Yehudit's lulling melody lines on the gorgeous "Sweet Dream", or the non-stop battle of guitar, sax, and violin on the scorching opener "The Imperfect Ten". For some raucous and complex free-jazz, dive into the raging title cut, or get swept away by the mystical, almost Mahavishnu-ish "The Hidden Place", complete with yearning gypsy flavored violin lines. A great stab at straight ahead jazz can be heard on the latin tinged "Baiao de Banff", while "Tribute" seemingly pays homage to classic sounds of the ECM roster of the 70's.
Once again Edgetone Records has provided the jazz audience with another stellar release, one that features not only solid musicianship but great songwriting as well.
