House of Lords: Come to My Kingdom

House of Lords is the mastermind of James Christian, and a musician who has enjoyed much success in this genre. His latest offering, Come to My Kingdom however presents little in pushing the genre beyond its limited palette. The CD opens with a grandiose "Overture, Purgatario, No. 2", and while the one minute plus track has aural promise, it quickly leads to the disappointing title track. The entire CD is very formula Pop-Hair-Metal in the vein of 80's mainstays, Whitesnake. Distorted block chords, uninspired synth washes, typical shred-style solos and sappy love lyrics appear on virtually every track. This CD is twenty years too late. It's not like it's even a tribute or homage to a past genre, it is steadfastly seeking legitimacy in today's market.

There is one saving grace in the track "In the Light" in that it features crunchy guitar with a surprising driving vocal on top. A somewhat interesting guitar theme/melody is complemented by an atypical approach to a power ballad format.
