These days, it's hard to find bands in the metalcore sub-genre that have much to offer. Let's face it, metalcore is a style of metal that probably has more bands trying to compete for a spot at the top than any, and we rarely hear anything that stands head and shoulders above the the rest. Thankfully we've got a group like Misery Signals around, who consistently release material that is not only fresh sounding but kicks some serious ass. Controller is their latest, a collection of 10 crushing pieces that feature plenty of melody, textured yet heavy guitar riffs, effective growls & clean vocals, pummeling rhythms, and loads of atmosphere. It's as if the guys in Misery Signals listen to plenty of post rock and prog with their steady diet of hardcore and metal, as Controller contains elements of all four, from tunes like the blistering opener "Nothing", the complex "Weight of the World", or the melodic "Labyrinthian". The guitar work here is quite tasty, a combination of brutal riffing, intricate fills, and textured chording, all three featured prominently on the excellent "Parallels". The band even conjures up images of Burst or Opeth on the atmospheric "Coma", and deliver progressive yet atmospheric thrash on "Reset".
Overall Controller is an extremely satisfying metal release, Misery Signals easily the cream of the crop on the Ferret Records roster, and one of metalcore's true stars.
