If you are unfamiliar with The Silverman, aka Phil Knight, a co-founder of The Legendary Pink Dots, then his latest release entitled Blank For Your Own Message is the perfect place to be properly introduced to this eclectic architect of sound.
This disc which comes in an impressive, hardbound book cover style layout has a very simplistic cover which like the title implies includes a blank section "for your own message". Perhaps this is provided for the listener to jot down his or her own feelings or interpretations of the music which is subtitled as A Zen Opera In Seven Parts. Likewise the interior is also sparsely decorated, with just a few cryptic messages included. The music itself is just as mysterious.
These seven untitled sonic tapestries draw from a wealth of various sources that include a myriad of various different effects, metallic sounding rhythms and dronescapes, as well as an assortment of field recordings. Each composition flows seamlessly into the next giving the listener the impression that Blank For Your Own Message is actually one drawn out collage of vibrant, shimmering colors. The music is absolutely hypnotic and is intended to penetrate the imagination of each individual listener so as to invoke their own images within their minds or to create their own message if you like.
Blank For Your Own Message is certainly aimed at a specific audience as it will most likely appeal to fans of The Silverman's other projects, i.e. LPD and Tear Garden. However that being said the music here isn't the least bit restrictive in the sense that any listener with a receptive, open mind should find this offering to be both inspiring and refreshing.
