Cyaegha: Steps of Descent

From Virginia comes the technical death metal band Cyaegha and their debut CD for Canonical Hours titled Steps of Descent. While it's pretty obvious that these guys cut their teeth on acts like Cannibal Corpse, Cryptopsy, Decrepit Birth, Spawned of Possession, Immolation, and perhaps Nile, Steps of Descent does show a band that has a lot to offer, and one that has the potential to break big in the extreme metal scene. Plenty brutal, you can expect a boatload of evil death growls from Daniel Cooley and pummeling drum blasts courtesy of Matt Wells here, and the technical guitar work of Steve Redmond moves in synch with the rumbling bass from Mike Tweed, making for a powerful and massive overall sound. Save for the brief proggy keyboard instrumental "Obductio Sapienatia", this is all 'go-for-the-juggular', full-throttle death metal, one acrobatic example of technical brutality after another. While not the most original delivery on the planet, Cyaegha come up with no shortage of crushers here, like the massive stomp of "Epiphnay of R'Lyeh", or the weaving & complex death of "Mask in Flesh" and "Logos Immolated". So, chalk it up as a winner for these death metal newcomers Cyaegha, with the caveat that their best is certainly yet to come.

Oh yeah, and the lyrics are all influenced by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, so there's another reason to check the CD out if you are into the writings of the master of the macabre.
