Wogulow Taroutz Vermo: Morok

Multi instrumentalist Alexei Taroutz, perhaps best known as the guitarist and founder of the now defunct avant-garde quartet I Am Above On The Left, has slowly become a much sought after composer in his native Russia due to his work on various film scores as well as his own solo recordings. His latest collection of music released through R.A.I.G. (Russian Association of Independent Genres) entitled Morok is an intriguing set that features nine varied, yet minimalist sounding compositions that utilizes a perfect blend of electro-acoustic instrumentation.

While the majority of Morok feels decidedly abstract , the music itself is certainly not complex or demanding but hypnotic and overall quite relaxing. The listener feels as if Morok is functioning as a soundtrack to which there are no images, save for any imaginary visuals conjured up in the mind as these atmospheric layers swirl around and into appreciative ears. Delicate traces of sampled electronics mesh with simple echoed guitar chords, single piano notes, and at times almost jazz rooted drum rhythm's play a dynamic role in the construction of this material. The music on Morok can be viewed as repetitious in nature however the slow and deliberate pacing of each composition allows for subtle, almost transparent additions which the attentive listener will gladly pick up on.

Overall while Morok definitely won't appeal to the masses, patient listeners and fans of minimalist, avant-garde music will find this to be an enriching and rewarding listening experience from beginning to end.
