Lang, Jonny: Live at Montreux 1999 (DVD)

Filmed in 1999 when hotshot young blues guitarist Jonny Lang was just 18 years old, Live at Montreux is a testament to the solid vocal and guitar skills of this young prodigy. A near hour long set, the young axe-slinger and his band rip through songs from his first two A&M releases, including such strong cuts as "Still Rainin' ", "There's Gotta Be a Change", "Lie To Me", and a smoldering cover of "Good Morning Little School Girl". Lang's guitar talents are quite impressive, his mix of blues and rock brings to mind players like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Healey, Johnny Winter, and a young Eric Clapton, and his soulful vocals are more than reminiscant of the blues greats of yesteryear. Hard to believe that this kid was still only 18 when he played this show, his first ever Montreux appearance, as his stage presence and mighty licks sound and look more like what would come from a cagey veteran.

Not much else to speak of on the DVD other than the 54 minute set, but it's well filmed with great sound, and the performance of Lang and his band is rock solid. If you lean towards the bluesier side of things, you can't go wrong with picking this one up.
