Malignant is certainly the perfect word to describe the seething storm of black metal hate served up by Sweden's AVSKY on their second album. Formed in 2002 the duo of TO (vocals & drums) and AE (guitars, bass) have a decidedly straight ahead old school approach that is reminiscent of early Darkthrone. The sonic qualities and performances on Malignant have a distinct garage style feel to it, although the production is definitely above average compared to what is the norm for this style of music. The duo sticks to pretty much the same formula throughout, which consists of an abundance of snarling, misanthropic vocals and tortured screams over slow to mid tempo rhythm's and while the guitars and drums do come through crystal clear in the mix, the guitars unfortunately sound a tad thin, which is often accepted as par for the course in this genre. However in this case I think a bit of beefing up in this regard would have made a considerable difference as far as sheer potency goes. That aside, Malignant pretty much delivers on its promise of a pulverizing and unrelenting trip into the abyss.
