Basse, Willie: The Money Grind

West Coast guitarist, Willie Basse, who's '80's metal band, Black Sheep featured such former members as Slash (GNR), Paul Gilbert (Racer X, Mr. Big) and the late Randy Castillo (Lita Ford, Ozzy) is still living out that gone by era with his latest solo CD, The Money Grind. Basse, unlike those former members mentioned, has still yet to make much of a name for himself and unfortunately this record won't do much in the way of adding to his fame & fortune.

The Money Grind is now what you'd call "Classic Rock" that is steeped in the vintage '80's with sound, songs and clichéd lyrics and cheesy chorus hooks. From his guitar playing, (which is very George Lynch-ish) to his raspy vocals (think Dizzy Dean Davidson formerly of Britny Fox meets Lenny Kravitz), Basse runs through 14 mostly forgettable songs on The Money Grind. This is NOT to say that Basse doesn't have talent, he obviously does, but I LOVE the '80's Metal scene more than most and this is the type of music from that era that gets picked on today. It wasn't really that good then, so 20 years later it hasn't aged well.

Willie Basse has been trying to rehash an era that left him standing by long ago and he needs to pick up the pieces and move forward. His former members have cashed in on quite a lot of success and if Basse wants a piece of that he'll have to be more than a retread of himself, that never hit big in the first place.
