With a baroque-meets-post-rock sound dubbed "fantasy folk" by this Los Angeles-based collective, Hour of the Shipwreck's full-length debut blurs the musical lines between, say, Muse, Radiohead, Danny Elfman and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Laidback and dreamy, The Hour Is Upon Us (should you choose to spend time with it) will be one of those love-it-or-hate-it albums in your collection. Vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Richie Kohan has a background in classical and jazz music, and he says his work here is greatly influenced by The Lord of the Rings films and animator Hayao Miyazaki. I'll buy that, as Hour of the Shipwreck sails through these seven visual and orchestral songs with ease and grace. The album's pace could have been stronger, but it is Kohan's thin, sleepy voice that may irk listeners the most — especially if they're looking for more vocal substance. Well-intentioned, but certainly not for everyone.
