There couldn't be a better title than Crimson Diablo for the debut CD by Shift F7. There is something diabolical and even ghoulish in the deep-red vocals and music of this creepy trio that has rightfully drawn comparisons to gothic godfathers such as Bauhaus and the Cure. Dancing on the edge of the dark side of the Eighties in 2008 is no easy feat, but Shift F7 pull off the gloom-and-doom with a dozen songs that almost all seem to revolve around the same mid tempos, dull deliveries and cold emotions. The rare exception? The oxymoronic "Numb Today," Crimson Diablo's most alive track.
This band is enigmatic as hell (its web site is under construction, and its MySpace page lacks such basic information as Shift F7's hometown) with a name and album art that belies its sound and spirit. File under "Retro Residue."
