The multi-gender quartet Infernophonic welds its classic-rock influences into a modern sound that fuses Zeppelin with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Think Wolfmother fronted by Heart's Wilson sisters. Although the hype surrounding this New Jersey-based band is a little excessive — Guitar World raved Spark It Up "will remind you of when music was played by bands," and the press materials accompanying the debut claim Infernophonic "burn away the conventions and pretensions of an ailing industry" — there is a real meat-and-potatoes attitude happening here. Elaine Tuttle's soulful, tough-chick vocals (which have drawn comparisons to Ann Wilson and Grace Slick) perfectly suit this swaggering, sometimes sludgy swirl of melodic, funky hard rock that even the Rage Against the Machine-like finale "Eye of the Jedi" can't deter.
