Brown Jenkins: Angel Eyes

In keeping with the current trends of USBM, the first full length release from Brown Jenkins entitled Angel Eyes takes a disturbing and dissonant journey into the black abyss. Last year saw sole member UA issue the Dagonite EP – which at 36 minutes is only three shy of Angel Eyes' running time of 39 minutes. While Dagonite was a fairly auspicious opening statement, unfortunately Angel Eyes does little to expand upon those songs; it merely rehashes the same formula. You get seven tracks which are completely interchangeable, primarily due to an agonizing amount of droning, high frequency, layered guitar, inaudible drums and infrequent, guttural vocals. This is pretty much just 40 minutes of sheer agony. So if the formula on Angel Eyes is the same as Dagonite, why then only three stars this time around? For this reviewer the songs on Dagonite instantly grabbed me and I was taken in by its sheer black ambience, something I didn't feel at all listening to Angel Eyes. Although the riffs are generally faster and the tempo changes are more frequent - the deliberate, slow building tension method that UA employed so successfully is really what's missing this time around.
