Melvins, The: Nude With Boots

The legends of sludge, The Melvins, are back again with another album, this one called Nude With Boots. Founding member Dale Crover & Co. churn out 11 nuggets of Sabbathian dirges here, long on slow, crushing guitar riffs, pounding rhythms, and vocals that more than remind of a young Ozzy mixed with some hardcore/punk aesthetic. Tracks like "Dog Island" and "Billy Fish" rumble along with plenty of stoner intensity, but then you have a creepy, almost Isis-like instrumental in "Dies Iraea" which sort of throws a monkey into the whole thing, proving that The Melvins have more than a few tricks up their sleeves. Elsewhere, you get the raunchy Aerosmith by way of the Doors styled rocker ""Suicide In Progress", the bombastic "The Smiling Cobra" (love the fuzz-toned guitar & bass riffs here), the funky garage rock of the title track, and the savage, nihilistic doom of "The Savage Hippy". Though there's some good stuff here, filler like "It Tastes Better Than the Truth", "Flush", "Kicking Machine" (which has some great guitar riffs but weak vocals), and "The Stupid Creep" kind of bring this one down a tad. Despite this, Nude With Boots is another solid offering from the usually dependable Melvins, who show they still have plenty of riffs to go around.
