Virtually unknown Ukrainian and self dubbed "Hyper Metal" band, Dark Mass, have a recent CD called Dark Mass Medium CD (MTHRFCKR records) with 10 fully Instrumental tracks. A little bit Thrash meets Progressive Metal, this trio runs through songs that remind one of early Joe Satriani meets Testament or Fates Warning. Very early to mid '80's sounding.
The 10 song CD is, well, not very well produced. To be honest it sounds like it was recorded in one of the member's bathrooms with a drum machine. However, there is some decent guitar playing on it and few catchy songs. "Guyee Shoomliat" showcases some nice acoustic passages, while "Comets Of Black Cosmothrash" adds some keyboards and textures to their normally fast and furious approach. The guitar player does show off a couple of cool runs here and there, but mostly sounds like he's trying to play faster than his abilities will allow. Kind of rough around the edges.
For an obviously "produced on a shoestring budget" CD, it doesn't totally suck. Dark Mass have mixed together obvious influences of Prog Rock & traditional Old School Thrash Metal to try and create their Instrumental version of such. They do miss the mark, but it's ok.
