Dagger Brothers, The: You Don't Have To Be Mad To Be in the Dagger Brothers But It Does Help

This 9 track album (for which I think I only have a 15 minute sampler) is the latest release from the Bristol based pop/electronic duo, the Dagger Brothers. The sound has a very 80s feel to it although their Myspace entry says that they sound like "Phil Collins on helium slowed down"! Vocals do vary from the low growling end of the range to distorted higher pitches supported by electronic drums and swirling synths. Occasional glimpses of the Stranglers as an influence appear, especially on "2 pairs of everything" and "pistachio".

"Do you remember the 80s" is a great pop tune with hints of Lou Reed in the vocals and conversation snippets. Morrissey and the Smiths come to mind on "The dog dog dogs". The rather menacing "Is that you Mitty?" completes what is an enjoyable pastiche of the era of the new romantics and pointy gel hair.
