Pallas: Moment to Moment (DVD)

Marillion could learn a thing or two from its neo-progressive peers Pallas. The members of this Scottish band aren't reluctant to rock anymore, as the classy 90-minute live performance on Moment to Moment makes so enjoyably obvious. Filmed in 2007 at the Wyspianski Theater in Katowice, Poland — a popular site for many prog bands to make DVDs these days, especially if said DVDs are going to be released by Metal Mind Productions, which is headquartered in that country — Moment to Moment finds guitarist Niall Mathewson coming out of his shell for an abundance of searing solos, expressive bassist Graeme Murray still looking as if he's ready to go work in the yard, and Alan Reed working the stage better than front men half his age.

Not surprisingly, much of this concert pulls from 2005's The Dreams of Men, Pallas' latest studio album. Although the band emerged with Marillion, Pendragon and IQ during the Eighties' prog-rock renaissance, Pallas went on hiatus in 1986, returning in 1999 to a new generation of listeners. For a more-comprehensive live look at the band's material, check out 2004's The Blinding Darkness, which included a dramatic appearance by controversial original singer Euan Lowson. Moment to Moment, instead, offers a worthy sonic snapshot of where Pallas stands today — and where they may be headed next.
