Overdrive: Let The Metal Do The Talking

Here is another one of those Metal bands that I've never heard of from the '80's, that broke up like 24 years ago and still decide to reform and make another record in this current climate of music today. Sweden's Overdrive have done just that. Being virtually unknown in most parts of the world, especially here in the States, it just doesn't make much sense, does it? Who's been waiting for the long awaited Overdrive reunion?

With an EP and 2 full length records made in the early '80's, I'm sure that the hordes of followers have been lining up awaiting this release!

But all joking aside, Overdrive's new CD, Let The Metal Do The Talking (yes I agree, it's a stupid title) is a pretty solid record. 12 tracks of in your face "old school" metal. CD lead off track, "Army Of Darkness" starts with a classic 1982-ish guitar riff that fans of old Megaforce or Metal Blade record bands like Exciter, Anvil or Overkill will eat up. Dio Horns up!! There is some great guitar work on here from dual attack team of Janne Stark and Kiell Jacobsson, and the vocals delivered by new vocalist, Per Karlsson are awesome. He reminds me of the singer from the classic Metal band, Jag Panzer, the one and only Harry "The Tyrant" Conklin. There's an old school comparison for ya! A powerful voice that finishes with some higher register wailing. A welcome surprise, for sure.

Check out killer tracks, "Deceived" or "Sinister Warfare" for some great Power Metal, but this CD is worth the price simply for the song "Chasing Highways". This song just smokes! Full on double bass drums, great searing vocals and a catchy melodic and heavy chorus. This is what '80's Metal was ALL about! Nice!!!

I don't know who has been waiting for this CD for 24 years, but it IS a solid release. If you've never heard of these guys and like classic style '80's Power Metal, Overdrive will do the trick for ya. Great production, really cool songs and it's all executed very well. Thank god bands are keeping the Old School Metal alive!
