The Devil And The Sea: Heart Vs. Spine
Louisiana based trio The Devil And The Sea are one of the latest bands to arrive on the seemingly endless sludge/ doom metal scene. Their debut release Heart Vs. Spine packs a raw, massive, in your face, onslaught of epic proportions for the bulk of it's seven songs. The never ending barrage of down tuned riffage explodes through the listener's cranium like there's no tomorrow, so one can't discredit the band from being you know… heavy. Unfortunately the majority of these very same riffs quite often come across as being just too darn redundant, and that is the major stumbling block with this album. With this in mind it's difficult enough to keep the listener fully engaged as it is, but it's quite another thing when three of the songs featured here run over ten minutes. The final track "Abra Cadaver" is a complete waste of time, clocking in at almost eighteen minutes, and featuring nothing more than excessive amounts of white noise, feedback and lots of pointless screaming. I give Heart Vs. Spine credit for it's uncompromising brutality, but as far as true substance is concerned, it comes up short.
