Issued for the first time on CD, this long out of print 2006 double vinyl only release No Wonderland, from Chicago underground outfit Plastic Crimewave Sound, is a sprawling 70 minute trip firmly rooted in a myriad of 60's and 70's psychedelic influences. Thick bass lines, simplistic tribal rhythms coupled with sinewy, acid fried, distorted guitar work form the basis for much of these space rock explorations. The absolutely face melting guitar and trippy sitar, which bubbles just slightly beneath the surface on the eight minute "Flower Eating Dreams" should give the listener a pretty good idea of what they're all about. The band also gets some cameo appearances from the likes of Chris Connelly, Michel Yonkers and Devendra Banhart who contribute spoken word passages, which act as interludes between some songs.
No Wonderland is an absolutely engaging listen overall and as far as modern psych goes, it doesn't get much better than this. The listener will marvel at just how well Plastic Crimewave Sound uses Syd Barrett, The Stooges and Hawkwind as reference points, all the while successfully carving out an identity of their own.
