Solo Piano from the Chaos of the Subconscious is such a lofty subtitle for this whimsical and snappy record of jazz, classical and New-Age piano performed by veteran player Tobin Mueller — perhaps best known for his work with Dave Brubeck and Janet Planet. Mueller calls the 13 songs on 13 Masks "progressive ragtime," and it's an accurate description. Taking influences from Thelonious Monk (one of the strongest and most imaginative pieces on here happens to be "A Monk Caught in a Thelonious Sphere"), as well as Brubeck, Scott Joplin and John Medeski, Mueller makes his piano sing — taking it through a wave of emotions but almost always ending his charming and stylish music with a surge of positive notes. There's a reason the majority of the 13 masks displayed on the cover of this collection are smiling.
