While the mainstream media may dig High Speed Secrets, a five-song EP from Philadelphia-based multi-instrumentalist garage rocker Lou Dog, because he sounds better than The Strokes and The White Stripes – but really, who doesn't? – Sea of Tranquility readers will relish the man's musical mind. Think Lou Reed meets Roger Waters. Or Led Zeppelin meets The Replacements. Or Bob Dylan meets Radiohead. High Speed Secrets, a teaser for Mr. Dog's forthcoming full-length album, is that eclectic.
These songs – performed by Dog and Dog alone – sound raw. But, like fine progressive rock, they were meticulously crafted. Bob Ludwig of Zeppelin fame was even called in for mastering duties. Dog's eclectic lyrics cover everything from politics ("Suspicion of Adults") and love ("She's Like the Sea") to holding on to what you have ("Why Don't You Call Me") and losing it, too ("Strangled By the Same"). Each of these songs creates a different mood and amply demonstrates Dog's versatile musical vernacular.
You don't have to be a fan of alternative rock, garage rock or even classic rock to appreciate what Dog is doing here. A desire to hear well-crafted music with an edge is all you need to enjoy these five best-kept secrets.
