Good to see some quality black metal on Metal Blade these days, here in the form of veteran band Desaster, whose new album 666-Satan's Soldiers Syndicate is actually their second release on the label following their 2005 platter of blasphemy titled Angelwhore. The band continues along a similar path here, delivering 10 brutal examples of no-holds barred black metal. No atmospherics or symphonics anywhere in sight, just pure violence and aggression, more in line with Scandinavians such as Marduk, 1349, or Gorgoroth. The gutteral roar of drummer Sataniac is certainly not for the weak of heart, but he more than fits the raging maelstrom that is the sound of Desaster. Tracks like "Angel Extermination", "Razor Ritual", and "Hellbangers" bristle with unrelenting ferocity, insane drums blasts and razor sharp riffing forming the foundation of these maniacal songs. Other highlights include the breakneck "Fate Forever Flesh", the speed of light "Vile We Dwell", and the surprising, grinding death/black metal piece "Tyrannizer", one of the album's best tunes, complete with evil vocals, slower riffs, and just an overall epic feel.
Chances are Desaster might have fallen under the radar for many black metal fans over the years, but judging by the solid results here on 666-Satan's Soldiers Syndicate, that might all change very soon.
