The masters of the Great Northern Hyperblast, Kataklysm, are back with their latest concoction of molten death metal, titled Prevail. Hot on the heels of successful releases like In the Arms of Devastation and Live in Deutschland, as well as tours with the likes of Dimmu Borgir, Unearth, Devildriver, Vader, Destruction, Divine Heresy, and many others, Prevail sees Kataklysm firing on all cylinders, not necessarily offering anything new, but delivering their trademark sound to the fullest. Full-throttle speedy death metal neck breakers like "The Chains of Power", "Prevail", "As Death Lingers", and "Tear Down the Kingdom" feature plenty of manic blast beats, crushing guitar work, and the excellent growls & screams from singer Maurizio Iacono. To add in a little variety, the band throws in some sludgy doom on the monstrous "Blood in Heaven", a bit of technical death metal in the form of "The Vultures Are Watching", as well as more melodic fare on "Taking the World By Storm". Let's not forget the closing instrumental "The Last Effort (Renaissance II)", a tasty little number containing plenty of crunchy riffs and sweet harmony guitar lines.
Hard to believe that Prevail is the 11th release from Kataklysm, a band who have consistently delivered solid material since 1993 and show no signs of slowing down. It might not be breaking new ground, but Prevail is quality death metal, full of musical thunder, brutality, taste, and melody, well produced by Jason Suecof, and featuring some very neat cover art.
