Distorted: Voices From Within

The second CD from the dual male/female-fronted Israeli progressive-metal band Distorted takes influences from Within Temptation, After Forever and Madder Mortem without, um, distorting its own sound. This is gothic, symphonic, Middle-Eastern metal with a flair for the unconventional. Particularly engrossing is mystical vocalist Miri, who provides beautiful contrast to guitarist Raffael's bellows. The tandem is most effective on the title track, when Miri and Raffael creepily sing in unison. "A Soft Whisper," on the other hand, is an organic pop song that explodes into a powerful metal anthem with minimal vocals from Raffael, twisting Distorted in another new direction. And the man's clean vocals on the dark mid-tempo rocker "Letting Go" reveal even more musical paths open to this talented quartet.

Distorted was formed a dozen years ago, but didn't release an album until 2005's Memorial. It appears as if years of fine-tuning their craft have given these musicians a clear view of the future — one that places them near the top of the overcrowded female-fronted metal scene.

Distorted: Voices From Within

My Score:

Can't say that I like the band name much, but it's clear after spinning Voices From Within a few times that Israel's Distorted are certainly a band to consider if you like the whole 'beauty & beast' gothic progressive metal thing. Somewhat similar to other bands like Tristania, Epica, Within Temptation, After Forever, Leaves Eyes, and Madder Mortem, Distorted features the stunning vocals of Miri and the crushing guitar riffs and growls from Raffael, the two working perfectly against each other, creating a sort of power/gothic/black metal vacuum that really works on tunes like "What Remains", "One Last Breath" and the high-powered title track. Most of the tunes are catchy, but with just enough metal thump and extreme tendencies thanks to Raffael's effective growling, this one should appeal to a wide variety of listeners. Gotta love the jackhammer drum work throughout as well! Candlelight Records has a good one here folks-make sure you investigate and hear it for yourself.
