The funeral doom duo hailing from Long Island New York known as Rigor Sardonicous have pretty much existed in relative obscurity for their entire existence, which is going on twenty years now. After one listen to their latest release Vallis Ex Umbra De Mortuus it's not hard to see why they haven't exactly broken out to the masses. The music itself has to be some of the slowest, drop tuned, sludge infested riffs ever committed to tape; unfortunately though the eight tracks featured here are so interchangeable that it doesn't make for a very interesting listening experience. These guys basically make Black Sabbath sound like uplifting speed metal. If that wasn't bad enough, the vocals of guitarist Joseph Fogarazzo are so distorted and twisted out of shape that it sounds like he was hit by the same tranquilizer dart that knocked out Will Ferrell in the movie Old School.
I tried to find something on this recording that could pass for a reason to make the average doom / metal fan want to seek out Vallis Ex Umbra De Mortuus , but even after repeated listens, as painful as that was, the bottom line is there just isn't anything to recommend here.
