Jethro Tull: Jack In the Green-Live in Germany 1970-1993 (DVD)

While much of this new Jethro Tull DVD consists of performances that many die-hard fans have no doubt seen at some point over the years, it's nice to now have one place that culls together some of this great German footage. What you get here is a near 45-minute snippet from Tull's 1982 'Rock Pop In Concert' show during the Broadsword and the Beast tour, which sees the band in great form cranking out tunes like "Pussy Willow", "Hard Times", "Jack In the Green", a remarkable "Heavy Horses", as well as older classics such as "Sweet Dream", "Aqualung", and "Locomotive Breath". From there, the DVD takes us to 1986, with drummer Doane Perry the fresh face in the band at the time, for one song from the Rock Summer Festival, a kicked up "Hunting Girl", and four tunes from Out In the Green. The highlights of this short set are "Thick As a Brick" (not the full version of course), and the wonderful "Black Sunday". For those into instrumental improvisations, Tull performs one in this set too which is pretty good, letting guitarist Martin Barre really lay down some impressive riffs and solos. A bluesy duo from a 1993 German TV show, "My Sunday Feeling" and "So Much Trouble", sees the band in a more laid back and relaxed mode, and the DVD finishes up with two vintage performances from the Beat Club show, "With You There to Help Me" from 1970, and "Nothing Is Easy", both featuring the line-up of Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Clive Bunker, John Evans, and Glenn Cornick. The latter is especially amusing, as it's not the finished take, with Anderson stopping the band twice for mistakes, the first time about 20 seconds into the song (and looking quite pissed), and the second near the end after a furious performance. You really get a sense for the perfectionist that Ian always has been from watching this clip. There are no bonus features here, just 95 minutes of Jethro Tull through the years of live performances in Germany, a nice booklet filled with photos and commentary, and a splendid looking case. Tull fans will certainly want to add this to their growing DVD collection.

My Score:

If you turn the volume way up, you'll be able to hear Ian apologizing to the rest of the band for halting "Nothing Is Easy." He's having stomach pains, and can't continue playing. So in this instance, it's not a perfectionist thing.

I just thought that might help! One little note -- the information supplied with the DVD is wrong. There are no performances from 1971. Both "With You There to Help Me/By Kind Permission of" and the aborted "Nothing Is Easy" are from 1970. A big clue is that they're wearing the same clothes the whole time.

Thanks for the article, and take care.
