Junk Farm: Ugly Little Thing

Junk Farm is billed as a fusion trio from hell, which in reality is just Germany. Comprised of guitarist / vocalist Benjamin Schippritt, keyboardist Berthold Fehmer (who also covers the bass parts on his keyboards) and drummer Michael Sticken, these highly competent musicians definitely possess more than their fair share of musical chops, which they proudly display on their second full length release entitled Ugly Little Thing.

Throughout this disc Fehmer and Sticken create a perfect, tight rhythmic foundation complete with plenty of challenging time signatures and quirky arrangements as Schippritt's melodic guitar pyrotechnics keep things close to the edge over the course of the eleven songs offered here. Schippritt not only has a remarkable amount of original sounding licks in his arsenal, but also as the main lyricist and vocalist he makes sure to inject a plentiful amount of humor into the music as well. Instrumentally Junk Farm perfectly blend these funky, fusion like rhythms with big metal riffs and touches of progressive rock to come up with a sound they can call their own. If there is one weak spot on Ugly Little Thing, I'd have to single out Schippritt's vocals which unfortunately don't always match the power of the music. That being said though Junk Farm is certainly an exciting sounding, young band with a bright future and if you like your music complex, diverse and with a good sense of humor, then you'll find plenty of meat on Ugly Little Thing that you can sink your teeth into.
