Whoa! Who could have expected this? UK audiences have been treated to Threshold drummer Johanne James' side project Kyrb Grinder for a couple years via live gigs. But it wasn't until the power trio released this lethal stick of sonic dynamite titled Defiance that the rest of the world was let in on the secret. Not as complex as Threshold but arguably just as heavy, Kyrb Grinder reveals James — who confidently handles all lead vocals with a powerful voice that sounds most similar to Living Colour's Corey Glover — to be a natural frontman (albeit one who sits behind the drums). Along with guitarist Dave Dart and bassist Eddie Vendetta, James jams with an extreme tightness you'd expect from an outfit that has played more than 200 gigs before heading into the studio.
Kyrb Grinder grinds with the anxiety and groove of Living Colour ("Defiance" and "What About Me"), the fury and passion of Rage Against the Machine ("My Heart Bleeds" and "Not In My Name") and the soul of Jimi Hendrix ("The Guide" and "Greatest Weapon").
