Planets: Planets

There doesn't seem to be a lot of information available on this duo from Napa California who go by the name of Planets. So let's start with what we do know; the band is comprised of Paul Slack on bass and Thomas Crawford on 'not bass', and the press release states that they've "achieved one of the most staggering math rock albums in a while". The only thing I can discern from that statement is that I must have lost touch with all of today's musical genres and sub-genres because I have no clue what math rock is supposed to sound like. What this debut disc does offer is twelve all instrumental tracks in approximately twenty five minutes, so the musical journey is a relatively short one. The attack of the music itself relies on a plentiful amount of jagged guitar work, beefy lead bass and loads of off kilter tempos and rhythmic time changes as each song quickly passes through your consciousness before you can even begin to wrap your mind around what they're doing. If it sounds confusing, well that's because it is. There unfortunately isn't really an explicit sense of direction here; just a series of twelve tracks which are ultimately interchangeable. All in all I'd have to say that Planets will probably only really appeal to the 'math rock' crowd anyway (whoever that is), but that doesn't matter because they'll probably eat this one up. Everyone else though should probably take a pass. The cool hand made cloth cover is pretty cool, even though mine still sheds like the devil.
