Eddie The Rat: Insomnia Sound Bible

Sometimes not throwing all your eggs into one basket musically has its clear advantages, for one it usually provides the listener with a challenging and varied overall listening experience. However there's a big difference between attempting to offer a disc full of musical diversity, and throwing you know what at the wall to see if it sticks. Honestly after listening to the latest release of Peter Martin's (aka Eddie The Rat) latest endeavor from his collective of musicians, entitled Insomnia Sound Bible, it's hard to say which approach he employed here. Martin's alter ego which began about seven years ago as a one man electro-acoustic experiment, over time expanded into an ensemble consisting of no less than twelve musicians. While many of the sixteen tracks presented on Insomnia Sound Bible offer hints of jazz, blues and even tinges of folk, via a multitude of instruments such as trumpet, violin, clarinet and various forms of percussion; unfortunately as a whole the compositions themsevles largely get bogged down by their own weirdness. It's as if Captain Beefheart, Zappa and Tom Waits all took hits from the same bong and got together for an impromptu jam session. Sounds appealing? Well on paper it might look good, but ultimately save for maybe 3 or 4 songs I don't think Insomnia Sound Bible offers much more than a general feeling of confusion.
