Corpus ChristII: Rising

While Corpus ChristII has been terrorizing Portugal's Black Metal underground for almost a decade now, the band's fifth release, and first domestically, Rising should be the one which brings them some much needed exposure on these shores. The man responsible for this cold slab of unrelenting mayhem is one Nocturnus Horrendus, and while he isn't exactly writing such lyrical masterpieces as "Jesus Cunt Licker" and "Holy Masturbation" any more, don't think for a second that he's lost his edge here because he hasn't. Also don't go looking for any symphonic passages, keyboards or studio gimmickry here because Rising concentrates solely on serving up massive amounts of pure, straight ahead, unadulterated Black Metal. In other words expect plenty of furious blast beats, devastatingly fast tremolo picking and torturous vocals that sound like they originate from the very bowels of hell. There is absolutely no filler on this scorcher as each song successfully ups the brutality factor from the previous track, giving the listener almost an hours worth of cold, violent mayhem. Surprisingly though is not all of Rising is about mach 2 blast beats and speed picking as tracks like "The Wanderer", "Untouchable Euphoria", "Heavenless Bliss" and the final number "Revealed Wounds" demonstrate that even when the tempos are slowed down, the riffs still remain as potent and effective as ever. The bottom line is Rising is as vicious an offering as you're going to find in the Black Metal genre, and that should be reason enough to want to add this one to your collection immediately.
