Dÿse: Dÿse

Named after a motel in Amsterdam, Dysecatmotel where musicians Jari Rebelein (drums, backing vocals) and André Dietrich (guitars and vocals) first met, comes their adventurous and far out sounding new project called Dÿse (pronounced doo-ze). Out to tear down any pre-existing musical barriers, the duo wastes very little time in grabbing the listener's attention right from the onset with the muscular opening number "Underlaydisk". This track, which glides along for just over six minutes is chock full of tight, complex rhythm patterns, jagged guitar work and I'll have to admit, some pretty quirky vocals as well. Throughout the course of this self-titled debut release both Dietrich and Rebelein sound as if they've been performing together forever, either that or they've been honing this material for a long time to get it to sound as good as it does. Dietrich will either throw out a series of funky or straight ahead metallic riffs, to which Rebelein will then immediately lock in and lay down the foundation with his deft and ever changing time signatures. It isn't all about the aggression and angst though as Dÿse at times leans towards the experimental side which is evident on songs like "Doccode" and "Wokkk" where a guest musician provided some great beatbox work. The closing number "Wolke" also finds the duo fleshing out their sound with two trumpet players. All in all the debut effort from Dÿse is a pretty engaging and promising debut effort and people should be on the lookout for what this dynamic and creative duo come up with in the future.
