Dreadnaught: High Heat & Chin Music

We're a little late in getting to this one, but that doesn't mean we should just shelve High Heat & Chin Music without giving it a little love. You see, Dreadnaught is one of those bands that can morph into whatever type of musical entity it wants: British power pop. Psychedelic jazz. Jam rock. Horrifying film music. Even self-described "progabilly." You name it, Dreadnaught can play it. In fact, we know of no other band, really, that can credibly (and fantastically) pull off songs with titles like "Stinkytown," "The Elevator Chaser," "(She Got The) Bony Cleave" and "Kazak, The Hound of Space" in ways that appeal to both mainstream listeners and those with more eclectic tastes. Plus, name one other musical group that can call novelists Dan Brown and John Updike hard-core fans.

High Heat & Chin Music spans 10 years and five albums of instrumental and vocal music that defies description. These three amigos are so damn dexterous that you can almost envision their fingers working faster than their brains. But with the two discs here clocking in at less than one hour each, it's fair to wonder why Dreadnaught didn't take full advantage of the CD format and give us a more expansive set. There's plenty of quality material in the band's back-catalog to have filled an entire box set, and we bet even the songs that didn't land on a record are still worth hearing. More, please…
