Salt the Wound: Carnal Repercussions

Carnal Repercussions is the debut CD from Ohio's Salt the Wound, a very impressive young deathcore outfit that more than brings to mind another hotshot newcomer to the scene, Suicide Silence. Combining brutal metal riffs that border on technical at times, crushing rhythms, and absolutely monstrous growls & grunts from singer Kevin Schaefer (who is no longer with the band), these guys really shatter the foundation throughout this 11 song outing. Plenty of death metal arrangements abound here, as well as the prerequisite carnage inducing breakdowns, but the great thing about these tunes is that each one sounds different, and there's a surprising bit of melody floating around here, which is a real plus considering how freakin' brutal this album is. Wave after wave of massive riffage comes from the guitars of Vince Stropki & Jake Scott, as they decimate songs like "Better Than This", "The Conformist", and the sledgehammer "The Rape and Pillage of Spisville" with absolutely killer metal thunder. The band even hints at the current European extreme style on the maniacal title track, with Schaefer really putting in a fabulous performance of varied screams and growls. Which leads me to ponder just how their new singer Matt Tanner is going to gel with these guys, as there's a certain spark that the original line-up has here, and Schaefer really does have a set of pipes for this sort of thing. I guess we shall see in the not too distant future, but for now, we have Carnal Repercussions to bludgeon our brains with, and it's a beat down well worth inducing on yourself.
