Lords of Outland, The: You Can Sleep When You're Dead

Damn...avant-garde jazz doesn't get much more evil and violent sounding than this. You Can Sleep When You're Dead is the second release from sax player Rent Romus and his outfit The Lords of Outland, a molten 9-song set of scorching sax bursts, bombastic fuzz bass from Ray Scheaffer, crashing drum work from Philip Everett, and various noises from pedal man CJ Borosque. This is no-nonsense, 'go for the juggular', manic free- jazz from this four-piece, and quite possibly some of the most savage and noisy music I have heard from the genre in quite some time. Romus can certainly peel the paint off your house with his violent & squonking sax outburts, and there's no exaggeration there. I dare you to crank up "Dark Wanderer" or "Do-gooders can run but they can't hide" with your windows open and not get all sorts of reactions from your neighbors. Check out the obnoxious sax squeals amidst plenty of Parliament style funk bass lines from Scheaffer on the crazed "Gasburger Sheep Slaughter House", or the avant-trip-hop dementia of "Party in Room 614A (M.Y.O.B.)", two examples of just how 'out there' these guys can get. You can almost say they approach extreme metal intensity on "Mrs. Darpafire does Washington", yet for "Disturbing Emergence" they mix haunting jazz fusion with jarring electronica. The Lords of Outland are out to kick some serious ass and leave nothing but armageddon in their wake with this platter of frightening avant-jazz. Explore if you dare...
