Brown Jenkins: Dagonite

By initially combining writer H.P. Lovercraft's story The Shadow Over Innsmouth with musical inspiration of the old school black metal of Hellhammer and Burzum, sole band member Umesh uses these influences as a springboard from which to launch this new black metal project called Brown Jenkins. While the end result on the debut EP Dagonite doesn't share much in common with Lovecraft lyrically, it's the sheer weight of the music, which threatens to take the listener down in a swirling black current at every opportunity, which really stands out. The method of attack isn't necessarily original but it is effective as layer upon layer of repetitive, droning guitar (which sticks only to the higher frequencies by the way) laced with reverb, borders at times on sheets of white noise. It will either drive you slowly mad or have you reaching for the volume knob. Umesh doesn't actually contribute much in the way of vocals but when his voice does appear, it explodes forth with a guttural growl of a man possessed. Dagonite just confirms this rapidly growing trend of dissonant and distorted Black Metal. If the cold, grim, black ambience of bands like Xasthur and Leviathan are up your alley then you should definitely add Brown Jenkins to your list for further investigation.
