Push-Pull: 3
Billed as a band of three Mikes (Bridavsky, Hoggatt, Notaro), this trio from Bloomington Indiana sets out to do away way with conventional song structures and the so called uninspired sounds of today's music on their six track EP 3. The first five songs finds the band sounding like a rather inspired combination of Fugazi's indie, post punk aggression and some of the finer examples of the early Chicago Touch and Go Records, indie scene which was best typified by bands like Shellac and Big Black. They rip through these song with an alarming sense of urgency and yet they still manage to get in what they have to say in well under ten minutes. The last track, the eleven minute plus "Union Songs" is where Push-Pull really begins to push their musical envelope and attempt to stretch out. It's a slow, heavy, dramatic build up for a little over four minutes, at which point all sound suddenly ceases for another four minutes. When they do eventually return it's just with multi layered acapella vocals, handclaps and basic percussion for another four minutes to bring things to a close. 3 clocks in at around twenty minutes and as a whole I'd have to say that although Push-Pull's sound is a bit of an interesting experiment, unfortunately it's not really a successful one.
