Calle DeBauche is an intriguing sounding instrumental trio hailing from Tucson Arizona which definitely seems to enjoy blending a whole slew of diverse influences into their musical melting pot in order to create something unique. And that's just what they've done on their debut independent release entitled Potemkin Carnival. The six songs presented here certainly show their willingness to branch out into a variety of different styles as there are elements of progressive intertwined with post rock and even jazz at times.
The opening track "Theme From Spearhead" is a multi faceted, rhythmic excursion which brings to mind the sounds of early Tortoise, that is until guitarist Mohadev gets a chance to tear into a lengthy and melodic solo. "Metal Clouds" begins much the same way as "Theme From Spearhead" with an emphasis on drummer Frederic's deft percussion work. Only this time the guitar work is slightly heavier, slowly building the tension until the song is about ¾ finished, at which point the tempo shifts and the softer melodies eventually bring the song to an end. "Adults" features more muscular guitar work once again but also sees the band working some more electronic sounds into the mix, which even includes a brief sax solo as well. "Spontaneous Combustion" is a forty second interlude if you will before things take another sonic detour with the bouncy and playful "Hey Hotdogs!" The last track "Brontide" is probably the most adventurous song on Potemkin Carnival and also the heaviest as well, as Mohadev, Frederic and bassist Dan slowly grind their way through this jagged sounding seven minute epic.
The majority of the music on Potemkin Carnival might be too eclectic for some; however it's basically that very eclecticism and aspiration to be different which ultimately gives them their own distinct voice in the end.
