Sweden's answer to Toto, Work of Art translates its ambitious name into infectious melodies, quality songwriting and confident musicianship. This is AOR of nearly the finest order – crisp, clean and full of emotional lyrics and swooning choruses that also stir memories of Giant and Journey. Singer, keyboardist and producer Lars Säfsund wraps himself up in these dozen songs and gives Artwork the look and sound of a veteran band – not a debut record. His playing bounces, while a powerful yet tasteful rhythm section ensures that rockers like "Too Late," "Cover Me" and "Why Do I?" remain tight. Even "Like No Other," which begins with a notably dated intro and weak verse that make the song initially feel like a misstep, finds new life by the chorus.
As with most contemporary AOR, there is very little (if anything) truly original here. But AOR either works or it doesn't. And like the bands Work of Art so gallantly emulates, this is AOR that works.
