Anima Morte: Face the Sea of Darkness

They may be from Sweden, but Anima Morte certainly have a lock on the Italian horror movie soundtrack style made famous by Goblin, Daemonia, and Fabio Frizzi. This is spacey, often times creepy prog rock, littered with tons of vintage keyboard sounds (Moog, Hammond, & Mellotron lovers, get ready!), tasty guitar work, and tight rhythms. Face the Sea of Darkness is an instrumental CD that grabs you right from the outset, with the exhilarating sounds of "He Who Dwells In Darkness" leading the charge into the stabbing prog of "Rise Again" to the Moog & Mellotron drenched "Devoid of A Soul". Gorgeous acoustic guitar picking creates a pastoral, lush backdrop for haunting Mellotron on "Wandering", while "The Hunt" recalls vintage Goblin with jangly, almost funky guitars and wild synth melodies. The CD is back-ended by two stirring tracks, the symphonic & bombastic "Twilight of the Dead", featuring some huge Hammond and Mellotron passages, and the somber, almost doomy "Funeral March". The latter is a creepy number with yearning Hammond, Moog & Mellotron lines, a perfect mood setter for a dark and dreary day.

Chances are most prog fans have not heard of Anima Morte, and that's a real shame. If you are into the above mentioned acts, or even Morte Macabre, you need to run out and find this one, and pronto.
