Dense, frightening, bizarre...all words that can easily describe Words and Music, the latest release from avant-garde/ambient group Feverdreams. Plenty of ominous soundscapes abound here, along with an assortment of whooshes, static, drones, clanks, knocks, clinks, and just about any other kind of oddball sound that these folks can throw at you. At times it's all just a little too subtle and minimalist, but when the volume picks up (seemingly helped out by massive waves of scorching guitar, percussive, and keyboard noise) on tunes like "Words and Music By Albert Camus", "Stale", or "Crawling Back In", it can be a rather compelling listen. Unfortunately, there aren't enough of those moments, and all too often tracks go by with barely any audible detection whatsoever, leaving the listener waiting and anticipating something that just doesn't happen. Still, I'm sure there's an audience out there for this sort of thing, so if you have a penchant for experimental, ambient, avant-garde material, this might be worth seeking out.
