Conure is the work of one man, Mark Wilson of 15 Degrees Below Zero fame and this disc which is entitled The Generation of our Grandfathers was inspired by a documentary film portraying the Nazi persecution of homosexuals as outlined in Paragraph 175 of the German Penal Code of 1871. Wilson was so moved by the film that he decided to create his own audio sound collage not only to raise awareness to some degree but primarily to summarize the general feelings and mood of the film itself. He takes a considerably lo-fi approach with the music, using a laptop and various different sound sources to create a rather harsh tapestry of sound, which at times borders on white noise. It's certainly not an easy listen but a rewarding one nonetheless as the minimalist approach of endless drones and surface static create feelings of grief, fear and isolation. At times muffled voices can be heard penetrating through the layers like ghosts from the past, adding to the already prominent feeling of sadness and despair. In the end Wilson has certainly delivered an introspective disc full of haunting beauty and depth, and one which will demand repeated listening.
