Evidence One: The Sky Is The Limit

When Evidence One first appeared on the international melodic hard rock scene with 2002's Criticize the Truth, the band was hyped as the next big thing — a modern-day throwback to the Eighties with contemporary musical sensibilities that featured members of Frontline and Domain. The buzz continued with Tattooed Heart, as opening slots with Axel Rudi Pell and the Scorpions propelled Evidence One to new heights. Now comes The Sky Is the Limit.

With a self-proclaimed title that perpetuates all that hype, the band's third album picks up where the other two left off. It's chock-full of over-the-top anthems and relentless rockers — the closest Evidence One comes to a ballad is the Cinderella-y "Won't Sleep Alone" — that don't sound too far removed from the likes of fellow Germans Bonfire and Jaded Heart. There's not a dud cut here, and songs like the soaring title track, the raging "Propaganda," the roaring "Raging Winds," the neoclassical mysteriousness of "Mindmine" and the minor-key drive of "Rain Road" are certainly memorable enough. But Evidence One is still missing that crucial piece of hard-to-find musical testimony that would truly elevate this five-man band to the "next big thing" level it so desperately desires (and, I daresay, deserves).
