Swedish Melodic Metal outfit Dogpound have recently released their 3rd CD simply called III (Lion Music) after an almost 2 year absence. This third CD finds the band taking on a new, more metallic sheen with a mix of big melodies and the sometimes overly used commercial Pop hook.
III contains 14 tracks that find Dogpound more hungry and heavier than their previous releases, but there are a couple of sappy love ballads that I guess the guys in Dogpound figured were needed to help balance out ( i.e., make more chick friendly) this CD. Dogpound find themselves somewhere in the middle of today's modern melodic metal, where most of these bands sound the same. Dogpound do manage to mix some cool melodies with some strong riffing on a few tracks on the CD. Mixed with good production and a Killer guitar tone from guitarist Micke Dahlqvist ( ala the amazing Rich Ward of Stuck Mojo!), III does have some good highlights like tracks "My Own Sin" and "Dead and Gone".
Overall Dogpound's III CD doesn't carve out any new territory with this bland release. The hooks throughout are a bit forced and very predictable. Great guitar tone, good production, middle of the road song writing and a terrible name, equal a very average and not that memorable of a CD.
