Intronaut: The Challenger

Intronaut's follow-up to their 2006 debut Void is the sort of extended EP The Challenger. This one features three new tracks, five live cuts, and a severely shortened & electronics laden remix of the song "Burning These days". While 55 minutes might not seem like an EP to some, the fact that the band threw this one out there for their growing fan base to chew on while they set about putting their next full-length together kind of qualifies it as such. As far as the new tracks go, all three are extremely solid examples of the post rock/metal style that the band is forging. Dense, yet heavy, with lots of atmosphere and room for instrumental noodling, especially on the gargantuan "Deep Architecture". Crushing guitar riffs mix with layered melody lines and growling vocals on both the title track and "Whittler of Fortune", recalling ISIS, Mastodon, and Opeth. The live cuts are good for what they are, showing Intronaut onstage, hungry and aggressive, but I'm wondering if it would have made more sense to save these for a fully loaded live set somewhere down the road. Still, the three new tracks will certainly raise the appetite of fans who are clamoring for new music from the band, and each piece shows that Intronaut probably have some great stuff in store for us in the not too distant future.
